Beethoven’s 9th and more late music
Written by Thomas Morgan
Thursday, 20 December 2007

The music of Beethoven is grouped in 3 periods: early, middle, and late. Beethoven's 9th Symphony is part of his late period.

If you like Beethoven's 9th Symphony, check out 2 of Beethoven's String Quartets from the same period: Op. 127 in Eb and Op. 135 in F. I listened to the Guarneri Quartet's CD of these quartets on my way to and from rehearsals for the 9th 2 weeks ago.

Recommended CD: Guarneri Quartet, originally released on Philips No. 420926.

This CD has been released again on Brilliant Classics with the Guarneri playing all of Beethoven's String Quartets (Barnes & Noble has them on line). The Guarneri also recorded Beethoven's Quartets for RCA in their younger days. Both sets are terrific!

I am very fortunate to actually participate in this concert as one of the singers of the San Diego Master Chorale. If you are interested in reading more about the Requiem and our preparations for it, please visit my weekly blog, right here:
